On October 16, 2025, the Judiciary of Tanzania, through the High Court Mediation Center, hosted the CEO Meeting at the Bank of Tanzania Conference Centre under the theme “Positioning ADR as the Preferred Mechanism for Resolving Disputes in Tanzania.” The meeting brought together leaders from the Judiciary, government institutions, financial bodies, law firms, and accredited ADR institutions like ESS Creative and Legal Foundation to strengthen collaboration in advancing Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).
Hon. Judge Zahra A. Maruma, Judge in Charge of the High Court Mediation Centre, presented impressive progress, with over 250 disputes successfully mediated between 2023 and 2025. She emphasized the Judiciary’s commitment to increasing public awareness and building capacity for mediators ahead of the upcoming National ADR Week in November.
Ms. Angela Anatory, Director of Public Legal Services at the Ministry of Constitutional and Legal Affairs, confirmed the Ministry’s commitment to provide financial and logistical support for ADR Week activities.
Deputy Principal Judge Hon. Imani Abood, who chaired the meeting, highlighted the economic and social benefits of ADR, noting that faster dispute resolution could release over TZS 8 trillion currently tied up in court cases.
Stakeholders, including ESS Creative and Legal Foundation, pledged strong support for the ADR Week. ESS Executive Director, Erick Mukiza, proposed involving community leaders in inclusive mediation training through the Tanzania Mediation Hub, in partnership with the Judiciary and other government institutions.
This collaboration marks a key step toward making justice in Tanzania more timely, accessible, affordable, and inclusive — demonstrating that mediation is not only a tool for resolving conflicts but also for strengthening peace and economic growth.
